Therapy in the Natural Environment

February 23, 2017

Where is the best place for therapy to take place? Therapy is often most effective when provided in an environment familiar and relaxed for the child.

When a child learns skills in a setting that is a natural place for her to communicate, she learns more quickly and carry-over of skills is easier. Often the family members can be an integral part of the treatment.

A child's natural environment is often home, preschool or daycare. Sometimes community setting such as libraries, parks and churches are appropriate therapy locations. Clinical spaces can be made natural with careful choices of materials and comfortable surroundings. A child's natural environment is a space in which the child is relaxed and comfortable - a space where they would naturally want to communicate.
